Proceeds from sales of a two-hour video highlighting the handover ceremony - expected to raise at least $9 million - will go to charities serving local youth and mainland immigrants.

  Money raised from selling videos and VCDs of Hong Kong Handover Celebrations will be donated to the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Breakthrough, and the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch.

  The Boys' and Girls' Club Association will use the cash to train youth workers and organise exchanges with the mainland.

  The Federation of Youth Groups has a similar exchange planned - its Study China Programme - which is aimed at identifying potential youth leaders and sending them to Beijing for two weeks' training.

  Breakthrough works with disabled children in an effort to achieve better integration into mainstream society.

  The International Social Service local branch will use the funds to build new centres in Shamshuipo and Wong Tai Sin, which will provide adaptation programmes and counselling for migrant children.

 Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan Fang On- sang, who announced the fund- raising plan, said the Hong Kong Handover Celebrations videos and VCDs were important historical souvenirs.

  The Hong Kong Broadcast Consortium - which groups TVB, ATV and Cable TV with government broadcaster RTHK - was established to pool coverage of the handover and was responsible for producing the video.

 It opens with the departure from Government House of the last British governor, Chris Patten, and includes coverage of the British farewell ceremony at East Tamar. There are scenes of mainland troops crossing the border, the SAR official handover ceremony, and the first meeting of the Provisional Legislature. It also includes glimpses of festivities and concerts, closing with the fireworks over Victoria Harbour on July 1.

 The footage was put together by RTHK editors. Deputy director of broadcasting Chu Pu- hing said: 'There has already been a lot of programmes produced showing Hong Kong's history and the build-up to the handover. This video is just the chronological recordings of those two days.'   Some 140,000 copies of the standard edition went on sale on September 22 ($288). A special limited-edition package is available by subscription.
