OVER 30 container manufacturers worldwide attended the first general meeting of the International Container Manufacturer's Association (ICMA) held in Hongkong on March 1. The meeting, which was attended by manufacturers from China, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, South africa and Europe, elected Mr David Wong, of Shanghai Pacific International Container Co, as its first president. Association's members produce more than three quarter of the world's marine containers. Mr Ikdal Nathani, president of Nathani Steel of India, Mr Vagn Rosenkilde Kristensen, managing director of Maersk Container Industry of Denmark, Mr Jackson Y. Yu, president of Associated Industries China, Inc of Taiwan were elected vice-presidents and MrJohn Nicholls, managing director of Neptune Container of Taiwan was elected treasurer. Mr Wong said the association aimed to provide an avenue for the industry to voice its position with other related industries such as container leasing and shipping line operators to make a concerted effort to address the environmental, technical and commercial issues facing the industry.
