Guangdong shoppers shun Internet

Felix Chan

Internet shopping has failed to catch on in Guangdong.

The concept had been given the cold shoulder by Guangzhou shoppers and retailers, Yangcheng Evening News reported.

It was believed many large retailers were reluctant to set up their own Web sites.

Although they acknowledged the Internet's growing popularity in the province, retailers felt housewives, the major shoppers, were not familiar with the system and did not always have access to the Internet.

Affected by economic conditions, the number of people who conducted their shopping through the Internet remained dismal, they said.

Problems with payment procedures and delivery services had also affected the service.

According to recent surveys, the majority of Guangzhou consumers are unaccustomed to the idea of Internet shopping.

Studies have revealed a number of users still fear the security issues involved in revealing personal information such as credit card numbers.
