The Democratic Party yesterday said more than 80,000 construction workers would be needed to meet Tung Chee-hwa's target of providing 85,000 flats a year.
More than 24,000 construction workers would be free after the completion of the new airport and the Convention and Exhibition Centre extension projects, it said.
Another 6,000 graduates from the Construction Industry Training Authority will add to the workforce.
Construction worker figures for the next two years are no higher than in 1988 and 1989, said Democrat Andrew Cheng Kar-foo. 'But the number of flats we're going to build is smaller than at that time, and we shouldn't have the labour shortage problem,' he said.
Mr Cheng said the Government should train enough workers to meet the increasing demand in the future.
