Survivors of the Manila Bay cruise tragedy would be able to appeal against the investigation report, they were told by Philippine officials last night.
Three officials, including Transport Under-Secretary Arturo Valdez who is leading the investigation, made the promise after taking statements from about 15 survivors.
Lawyer Andrew Cheng Kar-foo, representing the survivors, said investigators had promised to send them a copy of the final report, due in a week, and they would be given the chance to appeal if dissatisfied with its content.
Mr Cheng said they had also asked for the Philippine Government to compensate victims' families. Seven Hong Kong tourists died when the King Roger overturned in Manila Bay on August 15.
'The investigators stated clearly that the boat was reconstructed without approval and that the tour guide also has to shoulder some responsibility for the accident,' Mr Cheng said. 'But they said it was not practice for the Philippine Government to give out compensation. Mr Valdez promised to pass on our request.'
