Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan Fang On-sang is to head a steering committee to promote the Basic Law.
'The Basic Law . . . gives solemn and inviolable legal protection for the 'one country, two systems' concept,' Mr Tung said.
'All these factors which make Hong Kong the freest and most vibrant economy are safeguarded in the Basic Law. It is . . . important to the operation of Hong Kong's society that we understand it.' Plans for education and promotion programmes for the mini-constitution would be drawn up by the steering committee, he said.
Mrs Chan will also co-ordinate the efforts of government bodies and sectors of the community to promote the Basic Law.
The Home Affairs Bureau said it would help promote the Basic Law through an improved education and publicity programme.
It will sponsor projects organised by non-government groups, hold territory-wide roving exhibitions and produce multi-media teaching materials and self-learning packages for young people.
