Taiwan flags were absent at most of yesterday's Double Tenth celebrations in the wake of an agreement between Tung Chee-hwa's special adviser, Paul Yip Kwok-wah, and pro-Taiwan groups.

At a Tsim Sha Tsui hotel where Taiwanese groups held a reception to celebrate the Double Tenth Festival, 'national day' was not used in the title of the celebration.

There were no Taiwan national flags nor pictures of Chiang Kai-shek, the former Taiwan president. Pictures of Dr Sun Yat-sen, who led the 1911 Revolution, were displayed instead. Guests sang the song Plum Blossom, representing Taiwan.

No SAR government officials were present.

The de facto Taiwanese representative in Hong Kong, Cheng An-kuo, had agreed with Mr Yip that the pro-Taiwan groups would not fly the Taiwanese flag. Mr Cheng said raising the flag was 'not very important'.

'Most important is how to work for the freedom, democracy, prosperity and stability of Hong Kong,' he said.
