Marco Polo Pizza celebrates its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, an event which has prompted its nostalgic pizza boss, Barry Kalb, to trawl through his menu archives for tastes - and costs - of yesteryear. Kicking off the two-week celebrations are two days of 1987 prices. The original opening menu includes a 14-inch Margherita for $45, a Waikiki (ham and pineapple) for $55, and Neptune (seafood) for $75. Then there will be two weeks of special offers at the Lan Kwai Fong Pizzeria and sister operation, Il Mercato. Anyone ordering one pizza will get a second gourmet pizza at half-price. Customers who buy 10 pizzas in the two weeks will get one free. Cuban carousing The latest craze for cigars is giving rise to Cuban overkill in the SAR's bars and restaurants. Theme evenings and parties include Cafe Deco's Cuban night on Saturday, November 8. The Peak Galleria restaurant (tel: 2849-5111) is promising a 'colourful extravaganza' of Cuban rum cocktails and cuisine. The cocktail menu includes Cuban favourites such as mojitos and daiquiris. The menu, created by executive chef Martin Kniss, ranges from salsa to tamales. Tickets cost $800 per person, including the buffet, cocktails, wine, beer and, of course, one Cuban cigar. Bonus entertainment is the live cigar-rolling demos by expert Cristanto Hipolita. Stix in Causeway Bay (tel: 2839-3397) is also dedicating its October 31 Halloween celebrations to hot Havanan nights. Menu misgivings Menu descriptions often defy common understanding as chefs and restaurateurs seek mouthwatering ways to describe dishes. The latest concoction from the Hong Kong Renaissance Hotel is a classic. One of the dishes from the hotel's new European Lobby Lounge menu is 'smoked salmon and pumpernickel bread yoghurt marinated fruits'. Pumpernickel bread yoghurt? Also on the menu is 'sushi and sashimi delights sweetened ginger and wasabi'. The new Lobby Lounge, which is part of the hotel's European renovation programme, is being billed as a place that 'defines heavenly relaxation'. The lounge is open every day from 10 am to midnight. Mexican munching Scrambled egg burritos are the new tribute to Sunday brunch by Mexican restaurant Caramba! Breakfast burritos are topped with tomato salsa and guacamole and served with Mexican potatoes. Other fillings include spinach and chorizo sausage. Also on the brunch menu are banana pancakes and strawberry and chocolate crepes. The Elgin Street restaurant has a choice of cocktail and eight entrees for $124 (children $70) on Sundays and public holidays. Brunch is served from noon to 3 pm. (tel: 2530-9963)
