Party open to informal talks

Jason Blatt

The pro-Taiwan independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would be open to holding informal talks with Beijing, the party's secretary-general said yesterday.

Chiou I-jen told Taiwan's Independence Evening Post such a dialogue could 'reduce unnecessary conflicts' between the party and Chinese authorities.

But he added, there would be 'nothing to talk about' if discussions were ever to touch upon ideology.

Mr Chiou was reacting to reports that Beijing was changing its policy of avoiding contact with the party, which has become Taiwan's second largest political grouping in recent years.

While the party lacks contacts with the Chinese Communist Party, former DPP chairman Huang Hsin-chieh sought medical treatment on the mainland several years ago, and Hsu Ching-yu, son of DPP chairman Hsu Hsin-liang is studying at a mainland university.
