Mainland women are increasingly dissatisfied with their husbands, according to new surveys.

Changing views on sex and marriage emerged from studies released by researchers during this week's 23rd General Population Conference in Beijing.

A survey of 911 couples carried out by Xu Anqing of Shanghai's Institute of Sociology found that in all age groups, knowledge or enjoyment of sex was increasing but was still low.

The survey indicated that 35.6 per cent of men and 44 per cent of their wives did not know what an orgasm was. Asked if they had enjoyed recent sex, only 22 per cent of wives and 46 per cent of husbands said they had.

A total of 45 per cent of women over 50 said they thought sex was unimportant or even disgusting.

The study found women had a lower estimation than their husbands of the adequacy of their marriages measured in terms of emotional and sexual satisfaction. A total of 43.7 per cent said they were disappointed in some way with their men, 12.1 per cent higher than the similar response by men.

More women than men complained about the lack of romance in their marriages and 14.6 per cent said they would divorce their husbands were it not for their children, while only 9.5 per cent of husbands said they would.
