HONG KONG Stadium managers were given an ultimatum yesterday - improve the pitch or lose their contract.
Provisional urban councillors have agreed the planned June upgrading would be Wembley International's final chance, said Fred Li Wah-ming of the Democratic Party.
'This is the last time Wembley should have to do significant improvements and they should be long-lasting. We expect them to hire a consultant, and make a tender to get experts,' he said, adding failure would result in termination of their contract.
Work will start in mid-June and last about 14 weeks, costing an estimated $8 million. The pitch had an $850 million revamp three years ago.
The Urban Council will decide on Tuesday whether to approve a radical sound-system to equip the Hong Kong Stadium for a Michael Jackson concert.
Councillors discussed the issue yesterday and will make a decision after a briefing from a sound consultant.
