Bangkok is proving an unhealthy place for bankers right now, and it's not just collapsing financial markets that are causing headaches - as a Merrill Lynch heavyweight found to his peril last week.

Merrill's joint Asia-Pacific head of investment banking and debt markets, John McNiven, discovered that just visiting the Thai finance ministry can be injurious to your physical well-being.

We're told Mr McNiven held what must have been high-powered talks at the ministry last Tuesday.

So preoccupied was Mr McNiven with the discussions, that on his way out he bullocked face first through a plate-glass door.

We hear he has since told colleagues his first reaction was that he had been shot - before he realised the more banal truth.

In all, Lai See hears he required more than 40 stitches. He has been walking around Merrill Lynch's offices with enough bandages to do an Egyptian mummy proud.
