Speed versus markets in the Pentium realm

I would like some clarifications on a few points. I checked an IComp speed index file which shows that a Pentium 233Mhz processor is slower than a Pentium Pro 200Mhz.

1. Whereas this may be true with Windows NT, is it true if you run both systems under Windows 95 (and eventually Windows 98). Which would be faster? Would I see a performance difference in Windows 95 if I buy a Pentium Pro 200 with only one processor And which system should I go with, the Pentium Pro 200 or the P233MMX? 2. Does Intel's new chipset for 3D graphics run only on PII systems using Win98? Should I buy a PII, or will I be able to take advantage of this new chipset's 3D speed acceleration without changing my motherboard or chip? NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED I have not done any in-depth testing and have had to turn to other experts, including Intel, for advice. Since your question contains several elements, I have numbered them for clarity.

1. Intel's response to this question is that the Pentium Pro and the Pentium processor with MMX technology serves a different market. The Pentium Pro is meant for servers and high-end workstations while the MMX Pentium is targeted at the volume market.

This does indicate that the MMX chip, is more powerful. You will see performance improvements with a Pentium Pro on Windows 95 over the same operating system running a MMX chip.

A lot depends on the applications you use. According to Intel, 'volume systems' are now actually based on a Pentium II processor.

SoftDVD and AGP/3D runs best on a Pentium II processor system for both 16 and 32-bit computing.
