Compulsory lunch breaks may be enshrined in law to protect workers, it was revealed yesterday.

But competitive businesses such as those in the finance and media sectors might be exempted.
The Labour Department will complete a study by the end of this year to see if workers are putting in unacceptably long hours.
But until new rules are introduced it is not illegal to make an employee work without a break.
Commissioner for Labour Jacqueline Willis said she was concerned by press reports that Hongkong Tramways did not allow its drivers a lunch break.

'But I do not have the impression that it is a trend for Hong Kong as the labour market is highly competitive. Bad employers are unlikely to retain their staff,' she said.
