Two former employees of the old Lee Gardens Hotel have been brought back to work at the new shopping centre.

Tung Kau-leung and Tang Hing- pui were traffic controllers at the hotel.

They directed traffic along the private driveway to the hotel which has become The Lee Gardens.

'It used to be low-rise and mainly residential buildings around here. They were 10 or 12 storeys high at the most,' Mr Tung said.

The street is now marked off by towers more than 30 storeys high, including the 50-storey Manulife Plaza which is part of The Lee Gardens complex and the tallest building in Causeway Bay.

The two men took the noisy transformation of the area in their stride until they heard in 1993 that the Lee Gardens Hotel was to be knocked down.

Mr Tung had just retired after working with the company since 1975 but, like Mr Tang who was still working at the hotel, he was surprised by the news.
