Weeping uncontrollably, the mother of the man shot dead by a police officer demanded justice yesterday.

 Mrs Chan could not understand how an officer who required psychological treatment was allowed to carry a gun.

 'The entire police force is responsible. Why was this officer who is psychologically unbalanced allowed to use a gun?' she said.

 And she added that she did not care about compensation.

 'Give me $10 million, I still won't get him back. I have heard reports that there might have been a struggle and my son was trying to take his gun,' she said.

 'Why would he do that inside a police station full of armed officers, when he could have done it on the street when he was arrested? My son did nothing wrong.'  Chan Kwok-keung, 24, was shot three times in an interview room in Aberdeen Police Station.

 He had been arrested as a suspected illegal immigrant during a routine identity card check in Shek Pai Wan Estate.

 Mrs Chan said she was dumbfounded to discover the reason for her son's arrest.

 'What kind of a world do we live in that you can get killed for not having your ID card?' she said.

 'The officer repeatedly shot my son. How many times do you have to shoot to kill a person?  'He's not an illegal immigrant. He was born and raised here.'  Mrs Chan was burning paper offerings yesterday in a ritual outside her home in Wah Kwai Estate, Aberdeen, where her son had lived with her and her husband.

 According to her son-in-law, the younger Chan left home shortly after 8 pm on Saturday to meet a friend at a nearby estate.

 The friend turned up at around 9 pm to pick up Chan's ID card, telling the parents their son had been arrested and needed the card to be released.

 But he soon phoned the family to say the police station had been closed and an ambulance had just sped off. Shortly after midnight, police called Mrs Chan to ask her to come to the station, saying there had been an incident.

 Another son and the son-in-law accompanied Mrs Chan who said no one at the station told her what was going on and she was made to wait for hours before being taken to a hospital to identify the body.

 The dead man was the couple's second of five children.

 Mrs Chan said he worked as a mover for a transport company, but his father said he had underworld connections.

 The younger Chan was released from a drug treatment centre early this year after a six-month stay, according to Mrs Chan. She said he had been treated for soft drug addiction.

 Mr Chan said his son had been fined two or three times in the past several years for not carrying his identity card.

 'I admit he was not the best of sons but after his release, he had been very good. He had been helping to pay the bills,' Mr Chan said.
