The company - the network marketing arm of health product manufacturer Rexall Sundown - uses freelance agents to sell products, paying the agents a commission.

Rexall Hong Kong general manager George Mak King-wing said: 'Rexall is well-known in the United States for the financially lucrative reward schemes it offers distributors.' President for international corporate headquarters Damon DeSantis claimed a 'first level' distributor earned an average US$362 in monthly commission, while a seasoned, top-level distributor could generate commissions of as much as US$22,000 a month.

He estimated 25 to 28 per cent of the local population used dietary supplements compared with about 50 per cent in the US.

Rexall's first office in Hong Kong, the second in Asia after Seoul, could handle about HK$1.5 million of sales a month, Mr Mak said.

He said future expansion would focus on Taiwan and Japan.
