The broadcast industry is in a process of rapid change as it upgrades to the new digital technology. The Asia Broadcast 97 Conference hopes to shed some light on the implications for broadcasters of these changes.

Under the theme, Digital Broadcasting - Making it Work For You, the conference will run from tomorrow until Friday.

'Worldwide, there has been a revolution with analogue moving out rapidly and digital replacing it, so we chose that as the theme,' said Tim Kelly, TVB's engineering controller and chairman of the conference organising committee.

The forum will help industry professionals to keep in touch with the cutting edge of broadcasting technologies and techniques.

With the competition between terrestrial, cable and satellite and the arrival of interactive television and other innovations, the urgency to have an understanding of the latest technology and its applications is obvious.

The conference programme is designed to appeal to a cross-section of broadcasting professionals, from operators and technical engineers to management.

The focus will be on the practical side of new broadcast technologies. For this reason, many of the speakers are engineers involved in the operation of digital equipment. The last day of the conference will be devoted to specific case studies of companies involved in state-of-the- art digital technology.
