Police in hunt for axe killer

Thousands of police have joined the hunt for an axe murderer responsible for killing two victims and maiming dozens.

Police yesterday said 3,300 armed officers had been added to existing night patrols in Changchun, capital of northeastern Jilin province, after a string of attacks that sparked panic throughout the city.

At least two people have been killed and 35 injured in the attacks since last year.

There have been two incidents in the past month, Changchun police disclosed in a notice published in the China Youth Daily.

'Rumours are growing wildly,' said authorities, adding residents were scared to venture out after dark in the city of three million.

In each of the incidents victims were hit by an axe-wielding attacker in darkened stairways outside their flats.
