AIR China has ordered Skyphone services for its fleet of Boeing 747 passenger aircraft.

  The service will initially be restricted to in-flight satellite telephone communications, but may be extended to provide data and facsimile services.

  Skyphone will be fitted to the entire Air China long-haul fleet.

   The first of the B747s are now being equipped in Singapore.

  Through Skyphone's ground stations in Singapore, Norway and the United Kingdom, users will have direct-dial access to more than 200 countries.

  Skyphone is a consortium comprising British Telecom, Singapore Telecom and Norwegian Telecom.

  Mr Chen Heng-bao, China Air adviser and project manager, said: ''We are part of an age where satellite communications are the future and I foresee the signing of this agreement with Skyphone as being the linchpin which will take Air China into the 21st century.''   Singapore International Airlines was the first carrier to offer worldwide in-flight satellite communications services when it began using Skyphone in 1991.
