Has the kettle improved after thousands of years of use? Absolutely, says kettle manufacturing expert Kinox Enterprises Ltd.

  The company has been awarded the Federation of Hong Kong Industries Consumer Product Design Award for its 360-degree swivelling cordless electric kettle.

 The Kowloon-based firm makes cordless kettles and, this year, it introduced what its executives and judges believe is a product reflecting the latest trends in the market.

 According to Kinox, the key to the swivelling kettle's success lies in a number of unique features.

  'It's a hot item because it features concealed heating and a 360-degree swivel connector,' said Andy Sun, director of marketing and new product development.

  Mr Sun said although the kettle markets in Britain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Canada were already competitive, the two innovative features would drive the firm's kettle to the head of each market.

  'These two features are the latest trends in the cordless kettle market worldwide,' he said.

  The firm's engineers put a lot of effort into developing the heating element.

  The device, instead of being located inside the main cavity like traditional immersed-type heating elements, is welded to the underside of the bottom plate.

  Mr Sun said the traditional immersed-type heating elements tended to oxidize when exposed to water for long periods.

  Once oxidation reached a certain level, the minerals that had built up would begin to flake off into the water that was being heated.

  'It's very unhygienic and is a rising health concern for consumers,' Mr Sun said.

  He said the firm's engineers and designers had set the heating element within the kettle to prevent such hazards.

  'The concealed element does not pose such a threat.

  'In addition, the element heats at peak efficiency, bringing water to a boil within six minutes.'   Mr Sun said the 360-degree swivel feature was also a major improvement having been crafted by the firm's designers.

  The swivel feature allows users to place the kettle on the base unit from any direction.

  Traditionally, the kettle plug must be properly aligned with the socket on the base unit.

  'We are proud to be the first manufacturer in Asia to introduce the concealed element,' Mr Sun said.

  The kettle also comes with additional features, including a water purifier filter which fits over most kitchen taps.

  The nylon filtration device prevents limescale and other impurities from getting into the user's drinking water.

  The kettle includes a special drain hole design for its base. This prevents water from accumulating and causing potential safety hazards.

  Mr Sun said the kettle featured a sure-grip design, preventing slippage during pouring.

  'This is an important feature, especially when you are holding a kettle full of boiling water,' he said.
