Taiwan yesterday restored Asian golfing pride with a thrilling Nomura Cup triumph at Fanling.

With their one-shot defeat of world champions Australia, the Taiwanese claimed their fifth title in the Asia-Pacific amateur team championship.

It was their first since 1983 and the first victory by an Asian nation in the biennial tournament since 1989.

'This is the biggest win of my life,' said Su Chin-jung, who holed the winning putt at the Hong Kong Golf Club's New Course.

Four shots clear of defending champions New Zealand and seven in front of Australia at the start of the last round, the Taiwanese quartet of Su, Lin Wen-ko, Kao Bo-song and Chan Yih-shin saw their lead gradually whittled away.

However, thanks to Kao's 12-foot par-saving putt at the 18th, they were still in front by two when Su, playing in the last flight, went to the final tee.
