The 14th Hong Kong Folk Festival, Nestle Dairy Farm Theatre, Fringe Club, Central, November 8.

There were fiddling folk. There were older folk. There were younger folk, and there were seriously out of place serious folk.

Above all there were funny folk at the folk festival, entertainers who would sooner have burned their banjoes than contemplate the woes of the world.

No answers blowin' in the wind for them; but a riotous programme of gags, renditions, down-home philosophy, blistering playing - and the odd grave note when demanded.

Salford lass Marie Little flipped the chuckle-o-meter switch early. She gave the impression of a nervous north of England housewife bemused by how she came to be on stage.

And while she struck the odd blow for the feminists there wasn't enough political correctness to blunt the edge of her bawdy humour.

Fellow guitarist Derek Brimstone followed. Londoner Brimstone, probably of bus-pass age, looked eccentric - and that wasn't just part of the act.
