An off-duty constable who denied he was driving the car in which his girlfriend died was found guilty of perverting the course of justice yesterday. Sha Tin magistrate Loh Lai-kuen also found 28-year-old Chu Chi-kong guilty of reckless driving causing death. Chu's friend Yau Lai-fong, 21, was earlier jailed for a month after admitting perverting the course of justice by telling police she was the driver. Shum Pui-fun, 21, died of multiple injuries in the crash. The court heard that Chu drove Shum, Yau and two other friends home in the early hours of October 29 last year. His four-seater car collided with a minibus at the corner of Tai Chung Kiu Road and Sha Tin Rural Committee Road. Chu ignored a red light, the court heard. Chu told police he had only arrived at the scene after his friends telephoned him, the court heard. Sentencing was adjourned to November 25. Chu was acquitted of carrying too many passengers.
