A total of 2.3 million laid-off state sector workers found employment in the first half of the year, the Ministry of Labour reported yesterday.
This figure meant enormous efforts would be needed by the Government if it was to achieve its goal of 7.8 million redundant workers finding new jobs by the end of the year.
That total was estimated by Labour Minister Li Boyong earlier in the year in which he also said he believed 13.7 million workers would be out of work by the end of the year.
Last year, 10 million workers were laid off from factories, with only half eventually finding new jobs.
The ministry also said that 2.25 million laid-off workers had received advice on re-employment during the first six months of this year.
A total of 3.1 million have enrolled in re-training schemes while 700,000 have become self-employed.
