Singer's ex-wife in suicide leap

The ex-wife of Taiwan singer Ching Shan jumped to her death from a Causeway Bay building yesterday.

Chan Lai-lai, 49, was found unconscious on the third-floor patio of a residential building above Daimaru department store at Cleveland Street just after 11 am. She was pronounced dead at Tang Shiu Kin Hospital.

A note was found in her third-floor flat, saying a friend was unable to repay $100,000.

Her 61-year-old boyfriend told the police that Chan had consulted doctors in the psychiatric unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Ching Shan was one of the best-known Mandarin singers and was at the height of his fame in the 1970s.
