She might have uttered the immortal Gaelic motto, 'Uisgebeatha Go Brath' (Water of Life Forever). Instead, Eileen Ogle, wine consultant for the Oliver's delicatessen chain, simply declared 'I do' when she was admitted last month into the world's most prestigious Scotch whisky appreciation society.

Her formal induction at Blair Castle as a 'Keeper of the Quaich' was a notable landmark.

The 63-year-old grandmother became the first woman from Hong Kong to join the order.

By doing so, she joined an exclusive corps of local members, namely former footballer Walter Gerrard of Allied Domecq; Swire Group chairman Peter Sutch; John Wong of Remy Fine Wines; Seagram Asia Pacific's Andrew Muir; and Fine Vintage managing director Richard Paine.

Also on the roster, though now departed these shores, are HSBC's Willy Purves and James Smith, then-general manager of the now-demolished Hilton Hotel.

'It is a great honour for me,' said Ms Ogle, who now revels in the right to wear the society's own tartan sash.
