Millennio 1996 (certificate no. 01121), a showcase bear; investment and collector's item. Age: A little over a year. Career path: In 1902 Richard Steiff of Germany designed his first jointed bear, and by 1907 our family was famous and sought after around the world. I am 35 centimetres tall and have a coat of fine white curly mohair. Like all Steiff bears, I have a numbered ear tag which guarantees my authenticity. I am a traditional growler, decorated with a red satin ribbon, and my paws feature Austria's national colours. I have belonged to Jan Svoboda, who collects exclusive bears, for about six months. Jan really wanted me because he is Italian-Austrian, and I belong to a limited, commemorative edition of 1,500 bears made to celebrate a thousand years of Austrian history. Jan approached the Steiff Teddy Bear Clubs in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia, and they started a worldwide search for me. It took four months before I was found in a tiny shop in Bavaria, Germany, from where I was flown to Singapore. Millennio's Day: Shortly after acquiring me for US$450 (HK$3,475) Jan moved from Singapore to Hong Kong. We now live in Mid-Levels in a bachelor pad. We teddy bears - there are 10 of us, all Steiffs - live in a tall glass cabinet. I sit beside Harmony, also rather special because he was created to celebrate the handover. He has long curly mohair fur and a much friendlier expression than me because he is supposed to be happy about Hong Kong's return to the Motherland. My expression is more aloof, so although I am one of Jan's favourites people are not automatically drawn to me. I have a 32-year-old Steiff brother, but Jan, also 32, recently took him back to Vienna to stay with Jan's mother; he was worried that the humidity in Hong Kong could affect him. He is worth a fortune and needs special care, but we miss him. Jan is good to us. He spends a lot of time at work, in the hotel industry. He is out late, but when he is here he sits us near him. If he is having guests we are put out around the room so they can stroke us. I am happy with my lot. Our cabinet is cosy, and from my shelf I have a view of the city. I have the finest company and an elite existence, I think. Perks: Grooming with a soft brush. Ambition: To be auctioned at Christie's for a record price. Teddy, travelling companion and huggy bear. Age: In two weeks I will be 31 years old. Career path: I came from a small toy shop in Northern Ireland. My identical twin and I were bought for twins; I was given to Sara and my twin, Alistair, was given to John. We grew up in Northern Ireland, but when the children grew up we bears were separated. My twin now lives in London and I haven't seen him for many years, but I have heard Sara talking about him and she says I look better than him. I am less than 30cm tall and becoming worn with the years. I have some bald patches, but I'm made of colourful checked fabric so they don't look too bad. My eyes are bright and I still have my little black nose, so I look respectable. I've heard horror stories of bears who become scruffy and are thrown out with the garbage. Thank heavens I have a decent owner. Teddy's day: I've lived in a flat in Conduit Road, Mid-Levels, for the last couple years and although I find it hot in summer I don't mind it here. I spend most of my time on Sara's bed. I'm not alone; when Sara left her last public relations job in London she was given a bear as a farewell present and received another for her birthday two years ago. They are company and no threat to me because she is not attached to them. She cuddles me at night; sometimes she talks to me. It depends on her mood. My only complaint about life with Sara concerns her bleak fridge and grocery cupboards. Often the fridge is practically empty, apart from low-fat food, lettuce and a bottle of wine, which are no good to me. I dream of cookies or a jar of honey. I have travelled extensively, having lived in Ireland, Scotland, New York and Los Angeles. I always go on holiday. I know Sara's favourite place is Hawaii but I'm not keen on the heat. My favourite is the ski resort of St Anton, Austria. The chalet has a fireplace and it's perfect bear country. I've heard that there are some really fancy bears called Steiffs in that neck of the woods but I've not met one yet. Perks: Now and again a box of chocolates is brought home and I sneak some crumbs. Listening to classical music at weekends. Ambition: I'm not a fancy fellow. I live a simple life and I'm happy.
