Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski yesterday reasserted his country's 'one China' policy and called for Taiwan's peaceful reunification with the mainland.
He went on to liken President Jiang Zemin to a conductor leading an orchestra in a symphony composed by Deng Xiaoping .
Speaking to academics and students at the University of Hong Kong during an historic first visit to the region by a Polish head of state, Mr Kwasniewski said he raised human rights issues with Mr Jiang at a meeting in Beijing this week.
'I think he understood that for European countries this problem is important. But we must be careful to understand the complications and differences between human rights in Europe and in China.' Mr Kwasniewski said it was 'no secret' Poland had strong trading ties with Taiwan but he urged the 'peaceful process of Chinese reunification'.
