More than 3,000 officials have been implicated in multimillion-dollar rackets in the mainland building trade, authorities say.
The Ministry of Construction said 3,190 contractors, building inspectors and other officials faced prosecution for practices including the payment of 85 million yuan (HK$79.30 million) in bribes.
Vice-Minister of Construction Tan Qinglian said widespread graft was uncovered during a routine federal survey of building sites last summer.
'The inspection of the country's construction projects has been very productive,' Mr Tan told the China Daily yesterday.
Of 235,200 projects surveyed, inspectors found more than 109,300 were being built without proper approval or had failed to meet minimum safety standards.
'The inspection has allowed public security to clamp down on a number of corruption incidents,' Mr Tan said.
