ARSENAL defender Tony Adams could be facing another operation after being ruled out of England's friendly with Cameroon.
Initial reports that Adams was booked in for yet more surgery on his long-term problem right ankle and facing a six-week lay-off were played down by England chiefs.
But the Highbury skipper was advised to rest for last week in the hope that the inflammation will ease.
England coach Glenn Hoddle sent Adams to see a specialist after the Arsenal colossus reported for England duty having suffered a recurrence of the long-standing injury in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.
The England coach hinted that he feared the worst when he said: 'It's something that's come on gradually over the last few weeks. Tony had another reaction after Sunday and it felt a lot worse.' Football Association Director of Public Affairs David Davies confirmed: 'Tony saw the specialist and had an injection which was in a different part of the ankle to last year's problem.
'There are no plans for surgery at this stage but the situation will be re-assessed by Arsenal during the week.' Adams needed daily pain-killing injections to get through Euro 96 and after an injury-plagued season last term went under the knife in the summer.
