Liu Chi-keung, a 64-year-old businessman, was said to have been abducted, together with his aide, by six or seven men at Shanghai airport.

Mr Liu, who had gone to Shanghai on a short business trip, was reportedly taken by the group to Tianjin, where he was being kept under house arrest at a hotel associated with the People's Liberation Army.

He is a specially invited deputy to the CPPCC and a member of the 424-member selection assembly to pick Hong Kong's 36 deputies to the National People's Congress.

The selection process will begin at the end of next week.
