A FUND-RAISING appeal for the KELY Support Group got off to a running start this weekend with two donations totalling $50,000. The Rotary Club of Tsim Sha Tsui East handed over a cheque for $40,000 and Lan Kwai Fong restaurant Post 97 gave $10,000 to the support group for youths in emotional crisis. KELY is running a week-long campaign to raise $500,000 to cover operating its peer support meetings, a 24-hour hotline and its school outreach programme for the next six months. Twenty-six bars and restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong have been distributing special envelopes since Saturday for donations. According to the Post 97's managing director, Ms Nichole Garnaut, if clients at all the venues gave $2 each, KELY would easily reach its target. The chairman of the Rotary Club's Community Service, Mr Liu Hing-pong, said members had been impressed by KELY's peer support groups for troubled youths, many of whom were drug or alcohol abusers. Meanwhile, the Government has awarded KELY charity status, a move welcomed by the group's public relations and fund-raising officer, Ms Miranda Sears. Donations can be sent to the KELY Support Group at ground floor, Montgomery Block, 42B Kennedy Road, Hongkong. Cash transfers can be made into Hongkong Bank account 002-5-312075.
