Hong Kong teenage sensation Marco Fu Kar-chun stunned defending champion Stuart Bingham of England 11-10 to win the World Amateur Snooker Championship in a pulsating final in Zimbabwe yesterday.

Asian junior champion Fu achieved what his Hong Kong predecessors could not do - taking the world title - as he came back from a 7-3 first-session deficit to eventually grab the sport's most prestigious amateur title.

Hong Kong's other snooker stars, Gary Kwok, Kenny Kwok and the once highly regarded Franky Chan, had all tried to win the tournament but had only got as far as the semi-finals.

'This is a very important win for me. I didn't think I could win after trailing 7-3 in the first session, but I gradually gained in confidence and I knew I had a chance of winning it in the final frame. I'm delighted with my win,' said the 19-year-old, who won the Hong Kong Amateur Open in January.

'I was playing really well in the second session and I thought the pressure was more on Bingham because he won it last year.

'I thought I needed to give it my best shot and I'm really glad I came out of it a winner,' said Fu.
