POP music fans will soon find out whether their idols are well-received as the International Pop Poll is being conducted in the territory.
The function, now in its fourth year, is organised by Radio Television Hongkong (RTHK). The results of the poll will reflect current music trends and choices of local pop music fans.
A total of 10 prizes, including the Top 10 Gold Songs of 1992, Top Male and Female Artists and Top Band/Group 1992 awards, are up for grabs. Two new awards - Super Gold 1992 and Top of Remakes 1992 - have been introduced this year.
Up to 50 well-known songs, including Grammy award song Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton, I'm Always Dreaming of You by Tommy Page and local singer Sally Yeh and Dur Dur D'etre Bebe by Jordy Leomine have been nominated for the Super Gold 1992 award. These songs topped the RTHK music charts last year.
The five nominated songs for the Top of Remakes 1992 award are I Will Always Love You, Crying, S. O. S., What Becomes of the Broken Hearted and I'll Be There .
The five nominated songs for the Top Original of a Canto-cover Version 1992 award are What Becomes of Broken Hearted by Norman Cheung, Humpin' Around by Sandra Ng, Tears in Heaven by Kenny Bee, Friends for Life by George Lam and Save the Best for Last by Shirley Kwan.
''I like the song (Tears in Heaven ) very much. It's about the accidental death of the four-year-old son of Eric Clayton. It's really an outstanding song,'' Kenny Bee said.
