A $2.6 million British Council programme will be introduced in all Hong Kong secondary schools to improve English standards among Form Six and Seven students.
Implementing Self-access Materials for Independent Learners of English 2 (SMILE 2) will be funded by the Education Department's Language Fund.
The programme is aimed at providing cross-curricular Advanced-Level subject knowledge and increasing self-reliance and self-awareness.
The package also is designed to improve students' general knowledge.
SMILE 2 - the end result of a two-year project conducted by a British Council specialist team - is available this month.
Jamie Schone, a teacher with the council's Special Projects Unit, said: 'We find that a lot of students don't know enough about current affairs, and SMILE 2 will also encourage learner responsibility and help to bridge the gap between the learning habits of sixth-formers and university.' SMILE 1, which was introduced two years ago, was delivered only to Chinese-medium secondary schools.
