A nightmare quadruple bogey nine scuppered Derek Fung's chances of posting a below-par opening round on a day of mixed fortunes for local professionals at the Andersen Consulting Hong Kong Open.
Fung, who teed off on the 11th, had looked to be on course for a respectable total going into the final two holes of his round at one-under-par.
But disaster struck on the Hong Kong Golf Club composite course's par-five ninth hole, as the 28-year-old former Hong Kong amateur champion went out of bounds twice to card a nine.
A par on the 10th left Fung with a three-over-par 74, well off the first-round pace.
'I played pretty well, but I just got a bit greedy on the ninth and it cost me,' he said afterwards.
'I was thinking more about trying to get another birdie on that hole to go to two under rather than thinking about the hole.
