A police inspector asked subordinates to lend him money and apply for two $100,000 bank loans for him, a court heard yesterday.
Li Chung-yiu, 40, pleaded not guilty to three charges of accepting advantage as a civil servant and another two charges of accepting advantage.
The Western Court heard that Li, an inspector with the Hong Kong Island western division, borrowed $2,500 from his assistant, Wong Suk-yee, early this year but failed to repay her.
He allegedly borrowed $3,000 from Constable Lui Hon-man in March and asked him to sign as a referee on a loan application, which the constable refused to do.
Late last year, Li allegedly approached rookie constable Lam Wai-kin, saying a special report might be needed because of his 'bad manners'. The inspector later asked the constable to apply for $100,000 loans through a bank and a finance company and lend him the money, the court heard.
Barrister Tom Cheng Pui-kee, defending, told the court Li had repaid Ms Wong $500 and settled the rest of the debt with two sets of badges.
