Rainbows are formed when the sun's rays shine through mist or rain. The water splits the light into the spectrum of colours.

Unfortunately, we do not often have the chance to see a rainbow in Hong Kong. But the colours are always present in nature. Look around you and find the colours of the rainbow.

Red: the rhododendron genus includes many species such as the common azalea.

The flowers come in white, pink and red and normally appear in spring. The blossoms herald final school examinations.

Orange: the spectacular marine peacock worm uses feather-like tentacles to filter tiny micro-organisms from the water. It is a kind of polychaete and is found among the corals at Hoi Ha Wan.

Yellow: the common tiger moth, which is active during the day, is found throughout the SAR. Its larvae feed on poisonous plants and the accumulated toxins make the larvae and adults poisonous - or at least distasteful - to a predator.
