Rising star Alexandra Yeung Ka-wah won the SAR's first post-handover international cycling medal at the World 'B' Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.
The Canadian-Chinese finished with a bronze medal in the women's point race - Hong Kong's first women's cycling medal in an international event.
Yeung, 24, has improved tremendously since she started training under Hong Kong coach Shen Jinkang four months ago.
She participated in October's China National Games in Shanghai - becoming the first female cyclist to represent Hong Kong at a major multi-sports event.
'I did not expect Alexandra to win any medal,' said Shen. 'She did very well in the race. Women's events in Hong Kong have been developing for only a short time. Her performance was praised by other countries.
'I'm using this championships to discover her stronger aspects so we can pick the most suitable events for her in the Asian Games next year.' Yeung is set to compete in the women's 64-kilometre road race today, while Asia's top cyclist, Wong Kam-po, and teammate Lee Sai-hong will compete in the men's 160-kilometre road race.
