Chinese number one Zhang Lianwei is facing the prospect of an intriguing head-to-head showdown with compatriot Cheng Jun in this week's US$250,000 Volvo Asian Matchplay Championship.

Following yesterday's draw in Manila, defending matchplay champion Zhang and Volvo China Open winner Cheng are poised for a titanic clash in tomorrow afternoon's quarter-finals.

For that to happen, though, both have to first win potentially tricky second-round matches at the Mimosa Golf and Country Club tomorrow morning.

Zhang, who defeated Korean Kang Wook-soon in an epic 36-hole final in Jakarta last December, will take on the winner of the all-Australian first-round contest between Adrian Percey and Brett Partridge.

Standing in the way of Cheng, meanwhile, will be the winner of the opening round all-American tie between Christian Chernock and Gary Rusnak.

Cheng at least can draw confidence from his effort in last week's Omega PGA Championship at Clearwater Bay where he tied for 13th.

It was the first tournament in which he had made a half-way cut since his triumph in Beijing in May and lifted him to 14th in the Omega Tour's final Order of Merit standings.
