Provisional legislators were united in a call for the Government to extend the opening hours of the Lowu-Shenzhen border crossing to cope with increases in passenger flow.
The ultimate goal, they said, would be for the border to be open around the clock. It currently opens from 7 am until 11 pm.
Other means of public transport besides the Kowloon-Canton Railway should also be given access to the Lowu border, they said.
Tabling the motion, Lau Kong-wah of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong called on the Immigration Department to prepare for longer hours.
Statistics in November showed that the Lowu border dealt with a daily passenger flow of 169,000, jumping to 214,500 at weekends.
It was more than twice the 1991 daily average of 85,200, and significantly higher than last year's 131,000.
Liberal Miriam Lau Kin-yee said the jump resulted from an increase in Hong Kong people moving to Shenzhen.
