Appreciating classical music is no longer the preserve of serious musicians, participants at an inter-school quiz proved.
Some 24 schools took part in the 1815 Capriccio: Music Quiz, organised by RTHK's Radio 4. Sing Yin Secondary School won the contest aimed at enhancing students' interest in classical music. Runners-up were Diocesan Boys' School and Sheng Kung Bishop Mok Sau Tseng Secondary School, who were whittled down from 24 participants.
Amy Kwong Sze-yin, head of music at Radio 4, said the standard of musical appreciation among the students was high.
'I was very impressed, considering they were not students of music,' Ms Kwong said.
The quiz comprised compulsory and first-on-the-button questions. A sing-along in the compulsory section tested their ability to sight-read music.
They also had to clap to the rhythm and sing a melody from a well-known classical music piece.
