Restrictions on flickering neon signs for advertising at Hong Kong harbour were imposed due to fear of interference with Kai Tak Airport's signalling systems and aircraft.

Now that we are about to open our new airport at Chek Lap Kok it would be a good idea to rescind these restrictions and allow flickering and moving neon signs throughout the harbour area. Then, Hong Kong would rival the Ginza's glittering neon displays once we have movement and animation on the harbour front. It would also be a good tourist attraction for visitors to Hong Kong. The group representing advertising agencies in Hong Kong and the Tourist Association should press for the immediate removal of these lighting restrictions.
