Doctors in Beijing have launched a blood-testing campaign in kindergartens after claims of high lead poisoning rates across the city.

A survey claimed almost 70 per cent of children in the capital had dangerously high blood-lead levels, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The survey by the National Children's Health Care Society found the lead levels in Beijing children exceeded national standards.

It blamed the alarming results on exposure to polluting factories and vehicles.

Previous mainland studies showed that some blood-lead levels were 50 per cent higher than the level classified as dangerous by American standards.

The testing comes after intensified media attention on the risks of childhood lead poisoning.
