ANOTHER ambitious Pearl River Delta bridge project was announced yesterday to link Macau and Zhuhai by road.
The move comes less than a week after Zhuhai authorities unveiled formal plans for a 27-kilometre, 16.6 billion yuan (HK$15.6 billion) 'superbridge' linking the city with Hong Kong.
A Xinhua report announcing the latest project yesterday did not make clear whether it referred to a road link already under construction between the mainland and Taipa Island in Macau.
It quoted Zhuhai Vice-Mayor Zhou Benhui as saying construction of a 400 million yuan bridge would begin in March and be completed before December, 1999, when Beijing will take over sovereignty of the Portuguese enclave.
The report added that the cost of the bridge, which would span 1,100 metres, would be shared between the mainland and Macau but gave no further details.
Officials in both Hong Kong and Macau have been silent on the latest bridge announcements.
