I refer to the article headlined, 'Thailand's amazing human zoo' (South China Morning Post, December 20) and wish to clarify Thailand's tourism policy as follows: According to the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), it is not the policy of TAT to use the long-necked women of Burma's Kayan tribe as a feature to promote the campaign 'Amazing Thailand 1998-1999'.
The authorities responsible for promoting tourism in the northern part of Thailand and officials of Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai provinces, do not encourage the importation of these long-necked women of Burma's Kayan tribe to attract tourists and they have affirmed that the women's human rights have not been neglected.
Chiang Mai authorities are in the process of collecting evidence to prosecute those involved in the operation.
The long-necked women of Burma's Kayan tribe will be sent back to the restricted camp in Mae Hong Song. Their work permits will be revoked in order to protect them from being taken advantage of by selfish operators.
I hope that my explanation will help your readers understand Thailand's position on the above issue.
