Donations amounting to $20,000 have been received from South China Morning Post readers for Tam Chau, 81, who was robbed of her monthly $6,000 welfare cash on Monday.
Some of the money came from the chairman of the International Institute of Management, Dr Maurice Teo, who last night visited the woman and her family - her sick son and a 12-year-old granddaughter at their home in Lok Shun House flat, Tsz Lok Estate, Tse Wan Shan.
'I am very happy because there are so many people who came forward to help my family when most in need,' Ms Tam said.
She said the Social Welfare Department had reimbursed her with the money taken by the two robbers.
'I don't know any of the donors but I and my family wish to thank them for giving us such help and support.
'It should be a good year for our family as we now have some extra money for the coming Lunar New Year.'
