It has been a year of challenges for political parties. The liberals struggled for survival while their pro- China rivals found themselves in a position of power but embroiled in controversy.

The Democratic Party, led by chairman Martin Lee Chu-ming, embarked on fund-raising tours overseas, during which members also challenged the legality of the Provisional Legislature.

The trips led to a souring of relations with the then- Chief Executive-designate, Tung Chee-hwa.

Towards the end of its Legislative Council term, the Democrats helped push through laws relating to public flat rent increases, human rights and union participation.

In the early hours of July 1, they bade farewell to Legco in front of a 3,000- strong crowd in Central. But instead of consolidating its links with the grassroots, the party has been plagued by internal problems.

Leading departures include senior administrator Lau Sai-leung, who co-ordinated the party's campaign in the 1991 and 1995 elections.
