Techno ace wins gold

A secondary student has won the first gold medal for Hong Kong in the ninth International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Cape Town.

Poon Wing-chi from La Salle College won gold in the UNESCO-organised competition centred on computer-programming skills.

The United Nations Educational and Scientific Cultural Organisation aims to stimulate interest in computers among young people.

Other team members were Lau Tsz-kit from La Salle College; Chung Wing-on from TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College; and Leung Chun-ho from Sing Yin Secondary School.

Participants had to solve a set of algorithmic programming problems within a set time.

They were required to be familiar with techniques of file handling, string and numeric manipulation, arrays and text graphics.
